What Causes Addiction?
While some people may believe that addiction is a symptom of poor character and a lack of willpower, addiction is a disease that is caused by so many things. One of these causes is genetics. Addictive behaviour can also be passed down as a product of the environment. Mental health disorders can also be passed down, and many people can turn to alcohol or drug use as a means of coping with them.Environmental factors, such as growing up in circumstances wherein substance use was tolerated or even normalised and using substances at an early age, can also contribute to addiction.
Another environmental factor that can contribute to addiction is peer pressure. Even if peers do not directly encourage substance use, a person may still engage in it to fit in with their social circles.
